Housing Unit Takeovers (HUTs): A situation in which the legitimate tenant or homeowner finds themselves manipulated and endangered physically, financially, and/or psychologically by people who have moved into their home. This can happen to anyone and in our region, seems to be increasingly gang-related involving drugs, guns, and/or human trafficking. HUTs have serious negative impacts that also undermining strategies to end homelessness and provide safe and stable housing to our most vulnerable.

Each session is the same and includes:

  • An introduction to HUTs and a new regional project to address this issue by Peter Williams, Project Lead with the Peterborough Drug Strategy;
  • A presentation from the Dream Team*;
  • Local trends and challenges;
  • Exchanging ideas on needs and strategies for next steps.

*Dream Team is a peer-led advocacy group dedicated to advocacy, education, and research in the areas of supportive housing, mental health, discrimination, and stigma. Some Dream Team members have lived in supportive and social housing where they experienced HUTs themselves. Having survived a predator’s use of drugs and money to infiltrate and eventually take over their households, these Dream Team members are uniquely situated to give voice to the lived realities of HUTs in Toronto today.
