Game-Bling: When Gaming Meets Gambling

30 Oct Game-Bling: When Gaming Meets Gambling

Steve Keller | YMCA

The Game-Bling Workshop aims to develop and enhance critical thinking by exploring the impact of technology on the gambling market, the blurred lines between gaming and gambling and underage ‘gambling’ opportunities (e-sports, fantasy sports, ‘gambling’ in video games, skins, loot crates/supply drops, freemium gaming/in-app purchases, skins betting, etc.). In this workshop, warning signs of problematic behaviours including excessive video gaming, technology use, social gaming and gambling are discussed. Harm reduction strategies and support resources are provided.

Learn more about the ESRB and how ratings on games are not legal limits (versus limits on gambling, drinking, and smoking), but are in essence forms of harm reduction because they are intended to inform the buyer of the content that exists in the game they are purchasing.
