A Question of Care (QoC) offers a number of workshops as a part of its core curriculum on a regular basis throughout the year. Level One Core QoC Workshops

For Community Members

Strategies for Supporting a Loved One Who Drinks

This three-part interactive and engaging workshop series will build the capacity of friends and family members to help understand drinking beyond Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines and/or alcohol dependency, and how best to support their loved one(s). This course will build an understanding of alcohol use beyond the daily recommended limits, understanding addiction, and strategies for supporting a loved one.

Youth, Drugs, and the Law

This three-part interactive and engaging workshop series will provide information and practical skills to anyone in a position of supporting at-risk youth. Participants will gain an understanding of strength-based, trauma-informed, and youth-centered approaches with regards to youth substance use and the law. Additionally, the second session of this workshop series will contain a short presentation and Q&A with a Community Service Officer from the Peterborough Police.

For Helping Professionals

First Stage Trauma Treatment

This three-part interactive and engaging workshop series will explore new ways for participants to integrate trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive practices into their work and workplaces. Participants will have an opportunity to learn and practice safety and stabilization techniques that they can then share with clients.

Harm Reduction in Practice

An in-depth look at harm reduction as a foundational model for health and social services. This interactive multimedia workshop series will invite participants to engage in several core principles that comprise harm reduction as related to substance use. Through large and small group discussions and various group and individual exercises, participants will cultivate a more concrete understanding of harm reduction and work to develop an assortment of tools and strategies to better implement harm reduction practically in their professional and personal lives.

Supporting Clients Who Drink Beyond the Recommended Limits

This three-part interactive and engaging workshop series will enhance the skills of participants to better support clients/patients who drink beyond Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines and/or experience alcohol dependency. This course will provide practical, applicable tools for helping professionals to employ in their work.

Understanding Substance Use

This interactive, engaging workshop series will cover information about and related to substance use, including viewing substance use on a continuum, substance use effects, how people make change, review of an abstinence approach and a harm reduction approach, recovery treatment options in Ontario, stamping out stigma, and recovery concepts.

Motivational Interviewing

Join us for an introduction to Motivational Interviewing where we will explore how to enhance our conversation style with clients as they contemplate change. We will discuss topics such as how to explore ambivalence, roll with resistance, and elicit change-talk. Learn how to work within the Motivational Interviewing spirit where showing a genuine interest in the client’s perspective leads to further collaboration.
