Course Description

This two-part interactive and engaging workshop will build the capacity of friends and family members to understand substance use and addiction and how best to support their loved ones. This course will provide participants with strategies, tools, and resources for supporting their loved ones who use substances as well as themselves. Additionally, the second session will contain a presentation and Q&A with a family member with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of the continuum of substance use.
  • Develop an understanding of why individuals may use substances.
  • Develop learning around how individuals make changes through the Stages of Change model.
  • Learn how to set and maintain healthy boundaries.
  • Develop ways to communicate with your loved one in an open, non-judgmental communication style.
  • Learn about resources in Ontario that can provide support to your loved one.

Who should attend this workshop?
This workshop is designed for people who have friends, family, and/or other loved ones who use substances and/or experience addiction.

How many people can attend?
Registration for this workshop has been capped at 35 participants.

What supports will be provided during the sessions?
This workshop contains potentially sensitive content. While we are unable to offer counselling, if you would like support during the sessions, you will be able to reach out to the QoC Project Lead to be referred to a local resource. Additionally, the facilitator and/or Project Lead will be available to connect in the main room during the breaks and breakout groups.

How will confidentiality work in the sessions?
At the beginning of each session, we will ask that all participant’s identities and stories be kept in the strictest confidence to provide a safe space for all. Additionally, you will have the option to keep your camera off and use a pseudonym if it would make you feel more comfortable participating in the sessions.

What is a level one core QoC workshop?
This refers to a workshop that is a part of QoC’s core curriculum and is offered at a more basic, 101 level, though it can be beneficial to anyone regardless of their experience.

Will I receive a certificate for attending?
Yes, you will receive a certificate of attendance after participating in the workshop and filling out a post-course evaluation.

Will these sessions be recorded?
No, these sessions will not be recorded in order to maintain the privacy of participants, but any relevant slides and handouts will be sent to attendees.

What is your refund policy?
We can offer refunds up to seven days before the first session. Eventbrite’s fee is nonrefundable. After this period, we can accept substitutions. If we must cancel the workshop, you will receive a full refund. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Cheryl Robinson first entered the helping professions over twenty-five years ago by working at a shelter for men experiencing homelessness. It was there at the shelter that she became aware of the devastating cycle of addiction. Cheryl has been offering counselling for individuals concerned with their mental health and addictions for over seventeen years and has been a registered psychotherapist since 2015. Cheryl worked at a community addiction centre for fifteen years before serving as the Clinical Director of a residential treatment centre for two years. Currently, Cheryl works at Hope for Today Counselling in private practice and offers presentations in the community to help reduce stigma concerning mental health and addictions.
