Understanding Opioids: Methods for Prevention & Response

Course Description:

Drug poisoning rates have been consistently increasing in our community and across the country. We can all play a role in turning this crisis around.

In this course, you will learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose/poisoning by administering naloxone, a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose/poisoning. We will discuss the history of opioid-related issues within the Canadian context, the harms associated with opioid use, and the impact these have on the current drug poisoning crisis. Whether you are a working professional or an interested community member, this session will help you gain knowledge and skills that can be applied in a variety of settings.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the current context of the drug poisoning crisis.
• Understand the Pillars of Harm Reduction approach to substance use.
• Recognize stigmatizing language and commit to breaking down barriers through anti-stigma.
• Recognize the signs of an opioid overdose/poisoning.
• Know the 5 Steps to Save a Life, using Naloxone.

Will participants receive naloxone kits at the workshop?
No, participants will not receive naloxone kits but will be provided with information on how to obtain kits.

Who should attend this workshop?
This workshop is designed for community members and helping professionals in Peterborough City and County who want to gain a better understanding of opioids and the impact they are having in our community.

How many people can attend?
Registration for this workshop has been capped at 28 participants.

Where is the ABC room?
The ABC room is on the second floor of PPH. You can enter the building through the main doors, use the elevators to go up to the second floor, and then turn left to get to the room.

What precautions will be in place regarding COVID-19?
We will be following Public Health recommendations. Details on COVID precautions will be sent to registrants one week before the workshop. While it is our hope to be able to run this session, we may have to cancel it if new restrictions or issues come up.

Is the venue accessible?
Public Health is wheelchair accessible. There are a few accessible parking spots on the right side of the building, near the front door. Public Health also has a scent-free policy and gender-inclusive washrooms.

Is there parking?
In addition to the accessible parking spots, the King Street Parkade across the street provides one hour of free parking followed by paid parking.

Will I receive a certificate for attending?
Yes, you will receive a certificate of attendance after participating in the workshop and filling out an evaluation.

What if I am registered but can no longer attend?
